George Washington was born in 1732. He lived in Virginia with his family. He had a big family, with nine brothers and sisters! They lived in a large house with lots of farmland.

Most children could not go to school at this time. They had to work or help their families at home. But Washington's father had a lot of money. So he paid for Washington to go to school with other rich children. Washington even had teachers who came to his home to teach him.

But when Washington was eleven, his father died. Now the family had less money. Soon, Washington could no longer go to school or have teachers come to him. So Washington never learned how to do things that other rich people could do, like speak French or play the piano.

But Washington had other skills. He was very brave, and he was good at leading other people. So he became a leader in the army. He fought in wars. Later, he even became the first president of the United States.
